Canadian travelers are turning away from the United States in record numbers, with cross-border trips dropping 33% this year. In response, Air Canada is making a strategic bet on global destinations.

The national carrier’s route expansion is the most significant rollout in recent years. It offers direct access to Swedish capitals, Brazilian coastlines, Colombian heritage sites, and Central American adventures. The move signals a fundamental shift in how Canadians approach international travel.

Air Canada’s Travel Expansion in 2025

Air Canada has launched additional international flights to Europe, South America, and Central America, with new destinations including Stockholm, Porto, Naples, Rio de Janeiro, Cartagena, and Guatemala City.

The airline has also expanded Canada to U.S. flight routes with Vancouver-Nashville and Montreal-Cincinnati services. The expansion comes as Canadian travel patterns undergo significant changes.

U.S.-bound travel declined 33% in June 2025 compared to the previous year, while flight bookings dropped 40% by February. Conversely, overseas travel has grown substantially, with March recording 8.1% growth and April showing 9.1% increases compared to 2024.

Canadian travelers made 33.2 million international trips in 2024, spending over $41.7 billion globally.

European and South American Services Begin Operations

Canada to Europe flights have expanded with Air Canada’s Toronto-Stockholm service, which began operations in May with four weekly departures to Sweden‘s capital.

The airline also introduced a seasonal Montreal-Porto route in spring, targeting travelers seeking Portugal’s coastal attractions and cultural sites. A Montreal-Naples service now provides access to southern Italy, including archaeological sites and the Amalfi Coast.

Canada to South America flights will expand in December when Air Canada launches Toronto-Rio de Janeiro service for business and leisure travelers. The airline will also begin Toronto-Cartagena flights in December, connecting passengers to Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Colombia reported 2.2 million international visitors in 2024.

Air Canada plans to start Montreal-Guatemala City service in October, marking its first direct route to Guatemala. The service targets travelers interested in Central America’s archaeological sites and natural attractions.

Impact of Air Canada’s New Routes on Tourism

Air Canada’s expansion strategy reflects documented changes in Canadian travel behavior. With 33 million annual international trips generating substantial economic activity, the airline is positioning itself to serve evolving destination preferences.

The new routes provide Canadian travelers with direct access to diverse cultural and geographical experiences. Industry observers view the expansion as Air Canada’s response to growing demand for international travel options beyond traditional North American destinations.
