Imagine breezing through airport security without searching for your ID or boarding pass. That’s the future taking flight as American Airlines’ touchless ID makes its debut. The carrier is joining the TSA Touchless Identity Solution, offering AAdvantage members a contactless security screening experience at select airports. Earlier this year, Clear expanded its TSA PreCheck enrollment.

How TSA’s Touchless ID Program Works

The innovative initiative allows passengers to pass through airport security without presenting their boarding pass or ID. Instead, the touchless ID travel verification system utilizes facial recognition technology to validate a passenger’s identity, removing the need for presenting physical identification documents.

Kim Cisek, American Airlines’ Vice President of Customer Experience, acknowledged that the airport forms a significant part of a passenger’s journey. Commenting on the new American Airlines TSA updates, she stated, “We want to give our customers an easy experience while they move through every point of their travel journey. Introducing this option will help customers move more seamlessly from the airport lobby through TSA security to enjoy the next step in their travel.”

Industry Adoption and Implementation

The contactless TSA ID verification service has already gained traction in the industry, with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines implementing it at several airports, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and LaGuardia Airport (LGA). Following positive customer feedback, Delta recently expanded the service to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).

Greg Forbes, Delta‘s Managing Director – Airport Experience, noted, “Customers have come to rely on the time-savings and convenience it provides.”

As part of the TSA Touchless Identity Solution, American travelers will have the opportunity to renew their enrollment annually. While specific airports set to feature the touchless ID program are yet to be announced, an American Airlines spokesperson assured that information would be provided at a later date.
