The Real ID deadline for 2025 is rapidly approaching after nearly two decades of extensions and delays. This federal security measure, designed to strengthen identification standards following the 9/11 Commission recommendations, will finally be enforced nationwide.

For the estimated 19% of U.S. travelers who still lack compliant identification, the time for preparation is now critically short. DMV offices across the country are reporting unprecedented appointment backlogs as last-minute applicants scramble to upgrade their identification documents.

Do I Need A Real ID to Fly?

Yes—unless you have an acceptable alternative. Without a compliant ID, you’ll face delays, additional screening, and possible denial at security checkpoints.

The Real ID requirements affect anyone 18 or older attempting to:

  • Board domestic flights
  • Enter federal buildings
  • Access nuclear power plants

Real ID-compliant licenses feature a star marking in the corner. Your current driver’s license remains valid for driving, but won’t work at airport security after May 7 unless it has this marking.

The Transportation Security Administration will implement new identification verification protocols, though they’ve indicated there will be some form of “phased enforcement” initially.

NPR Travelers with non-compliant IDs should plan to arrive significantly earlier than usual for flights to accommodate potential additional screening.

Alternative Options to the Real ID

Don’t have time to get a Real ID? According to travel expert John Breyault, “There are workarounds people can use. Most people already have the ability to travel, whether they have a REAL ID or not.”

Acceptable alternatives include:

  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • Global Entry card
  • Military ID
  • Enhanced Driver’s License (in select states)
  • Permanent resident card

How to Get a Real ID Quickly

The Real ID application process:

  1. Schedule a DMV appointment immediately.
  2. Bring required documents: proof of identity, Social Security number, birth date, address (two documents), and lawful status.
  3. Visit in person—no online options are available for first-time applicants.
  4. Allow up to three weeks for processing (temporary papers won’t work for travel).

With nearly one in five travelers still lacking compliant identification, don’t be caught unprepared. Act now or ensure you have an acceptable alternative before your next flight.
