As of May 7, 2025, every U.S. citizen 18 years and older will need a Real ID or an approved alternative to fly domestically. The Real ID, a more secure, federally standardized driver’s license or identification card, was introduced in response to the 9/11 Commission’s suggestion to standardize identification sources.
The transition to Real ID cards began in 2005 and are now issued in all 50 U.S. states, including U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

How can you tell if your identification card is a Real ID? Look for a star in the top portion of the card – this denotes Real ID compliance. In California, they’ve opted for a uniquely identifiable bear with a star cut out.
A valid passport or passport card is an acceptable alternative for domestic flights. Additionally, Enhanced Driver’s Licenses, available in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington, meet federal requirements. These enhanced licenses feature the U.S. flag and “Enhanced” designation at the top.
How to Get a Real ID: Real ID Requirements for 2025
Domestic travel ID requirements continue evolving to enhance security measures. While alternatives exist, obtaining a Real ID offers long-term convenience for domestic travel.
The application process requires visiting your local DMV with specific documentation:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social security number
- Two proofs of principal residence address
- Proof of lawful status
Note: Individual states may require additional documentation. Verify requirements with your state’s driver’s licensing agency.
Whether using a Real ID or opting for passport-based travel, ensuring compliance with these new requirements will facilitate smoother air travel experiences. Transportation security experts recommend preparing well before the deadline to avoid processing delays.
