The American Museum of Natural History sleepover is back, giving families the chance to enjoy a real Night at the Museum adventure. This New York Museum night experience invites children and caregivers to see the museum in a whole new way.
Experience a Real “Night at the Museum”
The program, called A Night at the Museum: The Overnight Experience, opens the doors to kids ages 6 to 12 and their guardians. Visitors explore the galleries after dark, take part in scavenger hunts, and listen to stories that bring exhibits to life.
The event began in 2006 and was inspired by the Night at the Museum films. It was paused during the pandemic, but is being relaunched in 2025. This version now includes the new Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation.
“Whether it’s the thrill of encountering Tyrannosaurus rex by flashlight or the awe of sleeping beneath the massive blue whale, the experience is sure to create memories that families will treasure forever,” said AMNH President Sean Decatur.
What to Expect at the “Night at the Museum”
Guests bring their sleeping bags and settle down beneath the 94-foot blue whale in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. Families also enjoy flashlight tours of the fossil halls and games designed to inspire curiosity. A light breakfast is served before departure.
The sleepover is one of the most unique museum experiences NYC has to offer. It combines education with excitement, turning a typical visit into something unforgettable. Children are given the chance to explore science and history away from daytime crowds, and it strengthens the museum’s role as a place for learning, discovery, and family fun.
