Travelers on Spirit Airlines will need to seek alternative flight options as several routes are being reduced or discontinued.

Spirit Airlines is slashing 32 routes this fall, significantly impacting service from Boston (BOS) and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW).

The cuts include nonstops from Boston to Charleston, Chicago, Columbus, Kansas City, Norfolk, and Pittsburgh.

The airline will stop flights from DFW to Columbus, Kansas City, Memphis, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia.

A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines told Travel + Leisure, “We routinely evaluate our network and make adjustments to support the company’s business strategy based on current market and operating conditions.”

The airline will notify passengers booked on the affected routes of their available options.

Struggling to Compete in a Crowded Market

The Spirit Airlines route changes come as the carrier battles financial pressures and stiff competition.

Spirit faces fierce rivalry in Boston and DFW from airlines like American, Delta, and JetBlue.

The decision to discontinue specific routes is part of a broader effort to focus on better-performing services.

This unfortunate Spirit Airlines travel news came after a federal judge blocked the airline’s planned merger with JetBlue.

Spirit also reportedly faces a large debt bill due next year, driving its need to restructure.

“We updated our upcoming schedule to focus on our strongest performing routes,” the spokesperson added.

This year, other Spirit Airlines discontinued routes include Denver, Lima (Peru), and Puerto Vallarta (Mexico).

By January 2025, the Spirit Airlines route cancellations will be fully implemented, with Florida (Orlando to Hartford and Santo Domingo; Fort Lauderdale to Salt Lake City; and Miami to Nashville) and Las Vegas (Flights to Charleston, Louisville, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and St. Louis) also seeing reductions.
